Every soul will taste death. And We test you ˹O humanity˺ with good and evil as a trial, then to Us you will ˹all˺ be returned.
In the Quran, it is clearly stated that we all will ultimately meet our demise and meet our maker.
For many of us, we aren’t prepared for what we should do and how to handle the situation. It’s a very traumatic experience for everyone involved and a time of great stress.
People often don’t know what to do and call up friends and family for assistance. We created this guide to help ease the logistical burden for you.
First and foremost:
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un
Which translates to “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.
What you need to know
You can either hire a funeral service to take care of everything or handle everything yourself.
If you handle it yourself, you will have a HUGE cost savings
- After the person passes away, the body is taken to the morgue
- You need to make arrangements for the transportation of the body from the hospital to a Masjid of your choice -most use St. James funeral services, 631-584-5200. They will also obtain a burial permit, along with the death certificates. Always obtain extra death certificates, as they will likely be needed in the future
- The body will be taken from the hospital to either a Funeral Home or Masjid that has ghusl and refrigeration services
- You need to buy a plot from any of the three cemeteries that have a Muslim section
- You need to call the town of Brookhaven and get the burial permit – you need a copy of this and need to furnish this at the cemetery
- You need to coordinate with the Masijd about the Namaze e Janaza
- You need to announce to your family and friends and let them know about the timings of everything
Muslim Graveyards:
- Washington Memorial
- Mount Pleasant
- Pinelawn
All of the above have options for Muslim burial. None of them are Muslim Graveyards. There is one potentially in the works but it has not been finished as of the publishing of this post.
Washington Memorial
- Washington Memorial is the oldest cemetery on Long Island that features a Muslim section. At the time of this article, they had 3997 graves left. Once those graves are allotted, the graveyard will cease to accept new burials and will enter maintenance mode. This is typically the most sought-after, yet the most expensive, graveyard in the area. It has deep connections with many because they know so many who have been buried here. They do sell plots in advance, and many are buying them because there are few plots left.
You can call the Muslim representative for the Washington Memorial – Hamid Malik – 631-739-7381.
COST
$8500 to buy the grave plot
$3300 to open and close the grave
Total $11,800
Mount Pleasant
- This is the newest cemetery to open a Muslim section. The graves are exclusive to the Islamic Center of Long Island, and you need to buy through them. At this point, over 100 people have been buried at this cemetery, with multiple burials happening weekly
To book the plot you have to call the Islamic Center of Long Island
COST
$2300 to buy the grave plot
$1900 to open and close the grave
Total $4200
Pine Lawn
Where to do Ghusl:
- Islamic Center of Long Island
- Masjid Darul Quran
As far as we are aware, these are the two most popular Masjids that offer ghusl services. They have a designated area for Ghusl, which involves washing the body. They have the shrouds, the coffin, and refrigeration services on premises. This can also be advantageous, as it allows the community to make announcements about the passing of your loved one and enables more people to attend the namaz-e-janaza (funeral).
You can make an announcement on the funeral announcement group on WhatsApp.
